LIVE WORKSHOP: ASK-THE-EXPERT
When AFOs are Right for Gait and Wrong for Standing
with Billi Cusick
After practicing for more than 50 years, Billi discovered a publication that triggered a new Ah-HAA about AFO use. She’s eager to share this new insight with you.

This is a workshop for physical and occupational therapists who want to talk about walking and standing in AFO's and have questions for Billi about all things Billi Cusick.

Real clinical reasoning, pattern recognition, and a focus on understanding the 'Why' that determines the 'What'
"You tend to think it's magic. It's not magic — it's just alignment." — Billi Cusick

Grounded - Practical - Immediately Useful

Your Invitation

Come join us for 90 minutes of insights and clinically nuanced discussion with an expert clinician who thinks differently, questions the norms, and gets results.

Billi always needed to know how things work - In this live session she welcomes you into her wheelhouse built on:
  • The sciences of physiologic adaptation of all body tissues to routine use.
  •  The roles of the sensory systems and massed practice in sensorimotor learning.
  •  The complexity of science-based management strategies that challenge quick-fix assumptions Interventions and that support long-term gains.

You will leave with:

  •  a clearer framework for understanding ankle range and setting AFO angles
  • greater confidence in AFO decisions
  • clearer reasoning around weight line and alignment
  • new ways of observing compensation patterns
  • a deeper appreciation for why "there are no rules" is the rule

And you'll walk away with a broader, more connected way of thinking that you can bring into clinic straight away.
What Makes Billi’s Teaching Different?
Billi does not teach AFO fitting as a set of rules.
She teaches therapists how to reason.

Her work integrates:

  • ankle and foot biomechanics
  • casting and serial casting principles
  • postural alignment and weight line
  • femoral torsion and rotation
  • TheraTogs and strapping systems
  • five decades of clinical observation

What therapists repeatedly say after learning with Billi is not simply:

"I learned that you need wedges in orthotics."

Instead they say

"I understand why that angle works now."

And that is the beginning of meaningful progress.

Meet Your Expert
Billi Cusick is a pediatric physical therapist with over 50 years of clinical experience, internationally recognized for her work in developmental orthopedics, AFO tuning, and postural alignment.

She is the inventor of TheraTogs, founder of Gateways, and an associate professor at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Billi's teaching style is direct, practical, and deeply grounded in real clinical work. She is not interested in oversimplified answers.

She is interested in helping therapists:
  • observe more carefully
  • reason more clearly
  • and better understand the children in front of them

She brings together biomechanics, alignment, casting, and decades of clinical observation in a way that often challenges what we think we know, and helps therapists see the children in front of them more clearly and reason more confidently about what they observe.
Is This For You?
If you want to think more deeply about:

  • AFO tuning and angle selection
  • ankle range of motion measurement
  • casting decisions
  • weight line and postural alignment
  • clinical interpretation in paediatric practice

We would love to have you join us.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Is this only for therapists already experienced with AFOs and casting?
    No.

Billi welcomes therapists at every stage, from those newer to orthotic decision-making to those who've been fitting AFOs for years and want a deeper reasoning framework.
  • I already fit AFOs confidently. Is this still relevant for me?
Yes. If you work with children who need orthotic support, this session will sharpen how you read ankle range, weight line, and alignment — skills that matter no matter how experienced you are.
  • Will this workshop teach exact angle settings for specific conditions?
    No.

Billi doesn't teach angle-by-diagnosis rules. She teaches the clinical reasoning behind why an angle works for a specific child, so you can apply it to the kids in front of you rather than following a chart.
  • What if I can't attend live?
No worries. Everyone who registers gets full replay access - revisit anytime.
  • Can I submit questions in advance?
Yes. Once registered, you’ll be invited to send in your questions. If you're not able to attend live, your question will still be asked and you can catch the answer in the replay.
  • Is this suitable for newer clinicians or only advanced practitioners?
All are welcome. Whether you're new to pediatric therapy or have years of experience, this session will deepen your understanding of how positioning and environmental adaptations intersect with movement, communication, learning and participation.
  • Can parents access this recording?
Yes - these recordings are accessible to anyone who is wanting to understand how to support communication and access for their kids with complex needs. All discussions are general education content only and insights that arise from this presentation should be discussed with the child's medical team directly.
  • Will you go into depth on specific clinical cases?
This session focuses on general principles and pattern recognition. For in-depth individual case discussions, you can get an in-depth peer review by joining CEO. If you are a parent, you can access peer-review sessions for your child through your therapist.
  • Do you get any Continuing Education Credits for attending?
To keep this event affordable and accessible globally, we do not pursue individual CEU approvals across states and countries.

However, live attendees receive a certificate of attendance, along with the presenter’s credentials and session details, which can typically be self-submitted to your registration board according to local requirements.
  • What if I cannot attend live because of the timezone?
    No problem.

The full replay is included with your ticket.

You can also submit questions beforehand so your question can still shape the discussion even if you cannot attend live.

About CEO
For many therapists, these Ask-The-Expert sessions creates a shift.

You start to see things you hadn’t seen before.
You begin to question things you previously accepted.

And very quickly, a new question follows:
How do I apply this to my child?”

That’s where most workshops stop.
This is where the work continues.

Clinical Excellence Online (CEO) is where you take this further.

Not by learning more content.

But by applying this way of thinking to real children, in real situations.

Inside CEO:
  • You bring the children you’re working with
  • We slow things down
  • We look carefully at what’s happening
  • And decide what actually needs to change

It’s where insight becomes application. If you choose to continue after the workshop, you can step straight into that next level of support and tap into a team of experts that will make everything easier and more effective to implement

And your workshop ticket gets you two months free inside CEO so you can see if it works for you.

" It gave me the confidence to advocate for a new approach, resulting in dramatic improvements in the child's posture, breathing, speech, and overall function. CEO enabled this transformation that would not have happened otherwise, by connecting me with expert knowledge I could apply directly to help this child."
