LIVE WORKSHOP: ASK-THE-EXPERT

Augmenting Access

with Karen Kangas, OTR/L
Understanding how movement, positioning, and assistive devices shape communication, learning and participation in complex disability.

Whether you're questioning why positioning isn’t translating into function, trying to make sense of dystonic movement, or struggling to support consistent access to communication and participation, this session with Karen Kangas is your opportunity to think through it with someone who has spent decades working at the clinical edge.
Join Karen Kangas - no scripts, no simplified answers. Just real clinical reasoning, pattern recognition, and a focus on what actually makes a difference for the children you serve.

We can’t cure anything with seating…
but we can absolutely make things worse.

Join us for 90 minute of clinical clarity

Grounded - Practical - Immediately Useful

Your Invitation
Come join us for 90-minutes of insights and clinically nuanced discussions with an expert clinician who thinks differently, questions the norms and gets the results.

Karen will help you see that dystonia isn’t random or unpredictable, but follows patterns that can be recognised, interpreted, and responded to differently, and that these patterns directly affect a child’s ability to access communication and participate.

You’ll explore questions like:
  • Why a child who appears well-positioned is less able to function or communicate
  • Why too much stablity can sometimes limit access instead of supporting it
  • What dystonic movement patterns are doing - not just how they look
  • How tone, posture, and movement shape a child’s ability to express what they know
  • Why dystonia is not “difficult”… when movement is seen as communication that is predictable and meaningful

And you’ll
walk away with real-world strategies you can start using in clinic tomorrow.

Meet Your Expert
Karen Kangas is an occupational therapist with over 50 years of experience working with children with complex disabilities.
She is known for her work in:

  • Seating and mobility
  • Dystonia and complex movement patterns
  • Access to communication and participation

Karen is not known for following standard approaches.  She is known for questioning them.  Her work focuses on understanding what the child’s body is actually doing and why, rather than assuming the goal is to control or correct it.

She brings together movement, function, communication and participation in a way that often challenges what we think we know, and helps us move the needle for our kids with the most complex needs.

  • Is this suitable for newer clinicians or only advanced practitioners?
All are welcome. Whether you're new to pediatric therapy or have years of experience, this session will deepen your understanding of how positioning and environmental adaptations intersect with movement, communication, learning and participation.
  • Can parents access this recording?
Yes - these recordings are accessible to anyone who is wanting to understand how to support communication and access for their kids with complex needs. All discussions are general education content only and insights that arise from this presentation should be discussed with the child's medical team directly.

About CEO
For many therapists, these Ask-The-Expert sessions creates a shift.

You start to see things you hadn’t seen before.
You begin to question things you previously accepted.

And very quickly, a new question follows:
How do I apply this to my child?”

That’s where most workshops stop.
This is where the work continues.

Clinical Excellence Online (CEO) is where you take this further.

Not by learning more content.

But by applying this way of thinking to real children, in real situations.

Inside CEO:
  • You bring the children you’re working with
  • We slow things down
  • We look carefully at what’s happening
  • And decide what actually needs to change

It’s where insight becomes application. If you choose to continue after the workshop, you can step straight into that next level of support and tap into a team of experts that will make everything easier and more effective to implement

And your workshop ticket gets you two months free inside CEO so you can see if it works for you.

" It gave me the confidence to advocate for a new approach, resulting in dramatic improvements in the child's posture, breathing, speech, and overall function. CEO enabled this transformation that would not have happened otherwise, by connecting me with expert knowledge I could apply directly to help this child."
